What is the history of Vanier?
Vanier began in 1908 when Janeville, Clarkstown and Clandeboye joined to form the village of Eastview. Eastview became a town in 1913 and a city in 1963, was renamed Vanier in 1969 after Governor General Georges Vanier, and was amalgamated into Ottawa in 2001.
As of · Updated
Eastview was first popular with civil servants who wanted to live away from downtown, and later received a large influx of French Canadians. It held national attention during the Eastview Birth Control Trial of 1936 to 1937, after Dorothea Palmer was arrested for distributing birth control information.
